El Escorial

El Escorial

Autor: Mary Cable

Número de Páginas: 195

El Escorial is more than a monument to the zeal of Spain’s Catholicism; it is also a symbol of Spain at its imperial apogee. This imposing, granite edifice was built by King Philip II to celebrate Spain’s victory over the French at Saint-Quentin on August 10, 1557. Paid for with New-World gold, this sprawling monastery-palace is laid out in a vast grid of corridors and courtyards. At its heart is the austere Doric basilica of San Lorenzo el Real - beneath which are the remains of eleven Spanish kings, including Philip. The story of this fascinating, enduring symbol of Spain’s monarchy is vividly told by historian and bestselling author Mary Cable - from its actual construction to the dramatic lives and history of its rulers. Today, El Escorial is recognized, just as it was by Philip's contemporaries, as “la octava maravilla del mundo” - “the eighth wonder of the world.”

Manuscript containing the biographies of King Philip II of Spain and his son, Prince Carlos of Asturias. The biographies are followed by notes and reflections by numerous authors, including Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas, Manuel de Faria e Sousa, François Eudes de Mézeray, and Gregorio Leti. The notes are followed by two short works: An account and refutation of the false rumor of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V's conversion to Protestantism before his death; and the stories of three French queens "killed by the Spanish" while ruling as the wives of Spanish kings. The queens are Clotilda, consort of Amalaric, King of the Visigoths; Blanche de Bourbon, consort of Pedro I, King of Castile and Leon; and Elizabeth of France, consort of Philip II. Of particular interest is the prologue at the beginning of the manuscript in which the author discusses the debate over the origin of the biography of Philip II. The two possible authors discussed are Antonio Pérez, secretary to King Philip, and Pierre Matthieu, a French historian contemporary with Pérez. The author of the manuscript is in favor of Matthieu, and apparently is working from a translation of Matthieu's work in Italian. Henry...

Eso No Estaba En Mi Libro de Historia de la Casa Real Espanola

Eso No Estaba En Mi Libro de Historia de la Casa Real Espanola

Autor: Ana Fernandez Pardo

Número de Páginas: 480

Why is the Spanish monarchy Catholic if this state is non-denominational? What is the origin of the US dollar symbol and why is it linked to the Spanish coat of arms? Why is black the color of mourning? What does color green mean to monarchists? What was the instrument to communicate fashion trends among European courts when there were no magazines or Instagram? In the lyrics of which foreign anthem is the King of Spain still mentioned today? The kings and queens of Spain were the first influencers in history who inspired and set trends with their power, their occurrences, their conspiracies, their various intrigues and their "salseo". In an entertaining way, this rigorous, complete, and documented work helps you discover numerous anecdotes and stories of the ceremonial and protocol from the Catholic Monarchs to the reign of the current honorary kings. For the curious mind, an essential work which resolves doubts that conventional history books do not refer or Mr Google is not able to answer, such as: Why is Juan Carlos I the only king of Spain who has reigned with a compound name? How a jewel of Philip II ended up in the mouth of actress Elizabeth Taylor's poodle? Which queen had ...

Real cedulario 1556-9

Autor: Spain. Sovereign (1556-1598 : Philip Ii) , Guatemala. Audiencia , Edward E. Ayer Manuscript Collection (newberry Library) , Newberry Library

Número de Páginas: 24

Official copy of 25 royal cedulas issued by Philip II to the Audiencia of Guatemala between Jan. 17, 1556 and Sept. 8, 1559, concerning administrative, legal, and Indian affairs. The first cédula announces that Philip II is now king of Spain, due to the failing health of the emperor, Carlos V. Other decrees deal with Indian matters, such as the disturbances in Chiapas by the Pochutla and Lacandon Indians, who have burned 14 pueblos, taken many captives, and sacrified children; the subjugation and resettlement of these Indian tribes; and the appointment of an oidor to collect taxes from the Indians in the provinces of Chiapas and Tabasco. The king also regulates tithes required of Indians, the days on which Indian cases are heard in court, and the proper celebration of Mass in Indian churches. Some cédulas address dissension between the Franciscan and Dominican orders, and forbid members of religious orders to travel to America without permission from their prelates. Clergy assigned to one diocese cannot move to another without express approval of the bishop. Administrative cédulas concern gold and silver shipments to Spain; the incorporation of the Soconusco region, formerly...

Carta executoria de Gaspar de Gauna

Autor: Philip Ii (king Of Spain)

Número de Páginas: 68

"A Spanish illuminated manuscript on vellum, written in Gothic hand, with many capitals in gold on grounds of blue or red. The headings of clauses are in letters of gold on grounds of crimson. The opening page is elaborately illuminated. The large initial D on a blue ground is a miniature of Don Gaspar, his wife, and child, praying. Above in a cloud the Virgin and Child appear and in the lower margin the de Gauna arms. It has modern black morocco binding. - The text is a letter from King Philip II of Spain confirming the nobility of Don Gaspar de Gauna following litigation which was decided in his favor. It is dated at Vatladolid, October 20, 1569. The last part is a separate document, dated October 30, 1569 in Esquivias (Toledo). This town was the birthplace of Cataline de Salazar, wife of Cervantes, and it is interesting that the names of some of her relatives appear as witnesses on the document. She would have been five years of age at the time. Her marriage to Cervantes took place in 1584." -- [from 1973 Dysart Exhibition Catalogue].
