José de Ribera nació en Játiva (Valencia) y fue bautizado en aquella localidad el 17 de febrero de 1591. Hijo del sastre Simón Ribera y de su esposa Margarita Cucó, sus padres le enviaron a Valencia para que siguiera la carrera de Letras en aquella Universidad, pero su afición a las Bellas Artes le hizo cambiar los libros por los pinceles y asistir al taller de su paisano Francisco Ribalta (1565-1628). Ribalta abrió al joven Ribera el camino para llegar a convertirse en uno de nuestros mejores pintores.
