Bert Amandale is a horror novelist; he lives in Provence with his wife and teenage daughter. His best friend, Chucks Basil -a rock star- decides to move to Provence, and things start to get complicated, due to Chucks' dark past and his difficult relationship with Bert's wife. This book's frantic, murky plot renders it a masterful work of psychological intrigue.

In the beginning of the book (which consists of two volumes bound face to face, perhaps in a symbolic confrontation between two absolute truths), the girl protagonist learns to look beyond the appearance of material things under the guidance of a lullaby seer, wise and miracle-worker, an expert in the secrets of herbs and drinks. The young woman finds a partner who enjoys intense flavors: the enjoyment soon becomes transcendent emotion and participant in rituals and ceremonies.
