Origen y gestas de los godos constituye el primer intento conocido de crear una historia nacional de un pueblo europeo elaborado de modo consciente. El cambio operado en la obra de Jordanes con respecto a la historiografia romana tradicional es notable. Es la primera vez que Roma y su Imperio no ocupan el papel protagonista y el eje de los acontecimientos, sino que se convierten en parte marginal del relato en funcion de la historia goda.
