Known as the "Queen City of the Ozarks," Springfield was founded in 1829 and became the seat of Greene County in 1835. Beginning in 1870, Springfield served as a railroad hub that connected the Ozarks culturally and financially to Kansas City, St. Louis, Chicago, and points along the East Coast.
