«Hace cinco días que la nave tiene abierta una vía de agua en la popa, en la bodega las bombas de achique no responden, no se divisa la costa, la tripulación empieza a lanzar al mar parte de la carga—primero, la de los propietarios menos importantes; la pimienta nunca, ya que es propiedad del rey—, los carpinteros de a bordo se ven impotentes y ni siquiera se sienten capaces de informar de la situación a los oficiales, el contramaestre está enfermo, el piloto equivoca el rumbo, los pasajeros protestan inconscientes de lo que ocurre, empieza a llover y a soplar un fuerte viento que desgarra las velas y parte los mástiles, aparecen las primeras premoniciones del desastre y los hombres de la nao “Santa Maria da Barca” se abandonan a la desesperación.» De esta manera viva y perspicaz, Isabel Soler acerca a nuestra realidad las crónicas de los náufragos portugueses de los siglos XVI y XVII que Gomes de Brito reunió en la obra clásica “História Trágico-Marítima”.
