Publicada en la imprenta del propio Inclán entre 1865 y 1866, Astucia es una de las mejores novelas de aventuras que se han escrito en español. Carlos González Peña dijo que "jamás antes de Inclán, en la novela mexicana, se conoció el arte de cautivar con el juego de la acción y de la pasión desbordada". Esta primera edición crítica de la novela, anotada y restaurada por Manuel Sol, le da un nuevo esplendor y permite comprender por qué es esencial en la conformación del temple literario del país, y por qué es considerada la novela más vital y eficaz del México del siglo XIX.
