De forma suave, sin estridencias, con sensibilidad, mimo y fino sentido del humor, Ibrahim Aslán (una figura central de la ficción egipcia contemporánea) narra, en esta obra publicada en Egipto en 1992, la vida cotidiana de una oficina de Correos de El Cairo durante el turno de noche a través de sucesivas estampas: los empleados (entre ellos el narrador, en el que podemos ver un reflejo del propio autor), su labor repetida diariamente, la mujer que envía un telegrama al hombre al que ya no ama, la llamada a la oración, el té ardiendo, la correspondencia que circula de Oriente a Occidente, el compañero que se jubila, y otro que ocupa su lugar, la vejez, la chica de alterne... Aslán construye al detalle, con sencillez y frescura, la rutina de la oficina de Correos en la gran urbe cairota, de su noche «grande, clara y desolada», con la convicción de que «no seremos eficaces, ni necesarios, ni capaces de desarrollar nuestra creatividad aislados de la experiencia cotidiana que nos rodea».
