A Shadow Born of Earth

Exhibition highlights of the international photographic collection of the Foundation Televisa in Mexico with text by 81 prestigious writers. Each writer was given a copy of a photograph from the collection (from 1840-contemporary digital works) and asked to write an essay. Some of the photographers include: Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Anton Bruehl, Robert Capa, Gisele Fruend, Graciela Itrubide, Alfred Stieglitz, Cindy Sherman, Tina Modotti. Some of the writers include: Dore Ahston, Amitav Ghosh, Alvaro Mutis, Hugh Thomas, Jorge Volpi, Mike Wallace, Elena Poniatowska.

Tengo en las manos las pruebas del libro de Aarón Sánchez, “Así lo vi”. Observo las fotografías del México y el mundo de los últimos 50 años y encuentro y reencuentro rostros, paisajes y acontecimientos en los cuales compartí el trabajo con este infatigable reportero gráfico cuya inabarcable obra apenas queda insinuada en esta selección la cual, como todas, resulta incompleta.

Las fotografías históricas tomadas en América Latina han puesto en evidencia su valor como sitios cruciales de la política de la memoria, la imaginación etnográfica y la negociación de la identidad. Este volumen abre un conjunto de preguntas relacionadas con la agencia contemporánea de este tipo de imágenes, así como su apropiación actual a través de nuevas tecnologías.

Anthological exhibition of Cuban photography, fifty artists and one hundred images allow an extensive tour of the development of photography in Cuba since its arrival on the island in 1840 to the present. With this exhibition, curated by the specialist Rafael Acosta de Arriba, the exhibition of Cuban photography returns to the Museum's halls.
