A través del Islam es una obra fundamental de la literatura de viajes, así como un clásico de las letras árabes. Es un relato en primera persona de las aventuras y desventuras, placeres y sinsabores, del tangerino Ibn en su dilatadísimo viaje desde Marruecos hasta China en pleno siglo xiv. Al regresar a su Marruecos natal, tras un periplo de veintitrés años, Ibn compiló sus recuerdos de los países islámicos visitados con la ayuda de un granadino, para satisfacer el encargo del sultán merení de Fez. Con la finalidad de proporcionar al sultán informaciones difíciles de adquirir en la época, Ibn recoge datos históricos, geográficos, folclóricos y etnográficos, al mismo tiempo que narra costumbres, sucesos extraordinarios y acontecimientos heroicos, afirmando por encima de todo la omnipresencia del Islam como forma de vida y de comprensión del mundo. En la obra, que ofrece una visión de los países de Oriente coincidente en numerosos datos y apreciaciones con las narraciones de los viajes del italiano Marco Polo o del español Ruy González de Clavijo, hay también referencias a los conflictos internos del Islam y a sus diferentes sectas, así como descripciones pormenorizadas de los ritos musulmanes. Esta nueva edición de A través del Islam ha sido corregida y revisada por Federico Arbós. Además de la traducción, introducción y notas de Serafín Fanjul y Federico Arbós, el libro incluye índices toponímicos, onomásticos y terminológicos que facilitan la lectura y consulta de este relato excepcional del mayor viajero de toda la Edad Media.
