La principal aportación de Rafael Salillas a la sociología criminal, El delincuente español, consta de dos tomos: El lenguaje, aparecido en 1896, es un trabajo puramente empírico, sin intención teórica, pero que permite al autor posicionarse claramente en contra de las excesivas pretensiones de la antropología criminal italiana y El hampa, aparecido en 1898, en el que se trata de "tender puentes" hacia la teoría de Lombroso.
