La primera aspiración de Frazer para realizar este trabajo era explicar la ley que regulaba la sucesión en el sacerdocio de Diana en Aricia, trabajo que formó doce volúmenes. En 1922 lo reduce y lo publica al español en 1944. Frazer nos presenta una investigación que ha hecho comprensible a la mentalidad occidental una amplia gama de usos y costumbres primitivas, descritas a su vez en un estilo que no está lejano del de la literatura.
