Este libro intenta dar a conocer una primera manifestación (poco conocida aún) del carácter «combativo» del historiador Lucien Febvre. Los años 1907-1910, de intensas agitaciones sociales en Francia, vieron, efectivamente, la participación activa y militante en el periódico «Le Socialiste Comtois», de Besançon, del que más tarde, en 1929, juntamente con su amigo Marc Bloch, fundaría los «Annales d’Histoire Economique et Sociale»
