Inicialmente, el término Evangelio hacía referencia a la proclamación oral relativa a Jesucristo, si bien con posterioridad fue usado en relación con cuatro relatos escritos de la vida de Jesús. ¿Cómo tuvo lugar esto? En este punto, el eminente profesor Graham Stanton se basa en nuevas pruebas y recientes perspectivas para abordar esta controvertida cuestión. Insiste en que, en el primitivo periodo pospascual, quienes escuchaban el Evangelio de Jesucristo lo hacían teniendo como telón de fondo una serie rival de evangelios relativos a los emperadores romanos. Conforme avanzan los capítulos, Stanton examina las primeras críticas sobre Jesús y sobre las reivindicaciones de su resurrección. Finalmente, estudia la primitiva preferencia cristiana por el formato códice (libro) en cuanto opuesto al generalizado rollo, y socava el punto de vista de que las primeras copias de los evangelios fueron consideradas manuales para la clientela de una secta cerrada. Estamos ante un oportuno estudio de amplio interés, dado además que la mitad de los materiales han sido hasta el momento inéditos y que el resto ha sido cuidadosamente recopilado a partir de fuentes de difícil acceso. Graham Stanton es catedrático de Teología en el Lady Margaret de la Universidad de Cambridge y miembro de la junta de gobierno del Fitzwilliam College. Sus publicaciones incluyen Gospel Truth?
