Juan Uría Ríu nace en Oviedo el 7 de octubre de 1891. Estudia Derecho en la Universidad ovetense. Posteriormente se traslada a Madrid, donde se licencia en Historia. A fines de 1918, participa en la fundación del Centro de Estudios Asturianos, siendo uno de los principales animadores desde su Boletín, en el que da a conocer sus primeros trabajos de investigación, centrados por entonces en la etnografía y la antropología física.
