La catedral de València no és només la institució eclesiàstica més important de la diòcesi, suposa també un itinerari per la història de l'art valencià des del romànic tardà i el gòtic fins avui. Constitueix un ben cultural únic, alhora que s'emmarca en la història de la societat i del pensament cristià d'Occident. La present monografia ens descobreix el que hi ha, el que va haver i el que encara pot ser i mostrar la catedral, una triple dimensió: històrica, artística i arqueològica. L'autor parteix dels elements arquitectònics externs i interns per a contextualitzar la resta del ric patrimoni històric-artístic que conserva. L'obra dispersa del canonge erudit Juan Ángel Oñate mereixia una publicació en un únic volum per tal de donar a conèixer les seues aportacions a la història de l'església mare de València: la catedral metropolitana.
