Un Pueblo Dividido

Resumen del Libro

Libro Un Pueblo Dividido

This book is a landmark in Mexican rural history. Activists and professional historians have long argued that the nineteenth-century privatization of indigenous communal lands was the original sin that laid the ground for the agrarian strife of the twentieth century. Many also claimed that this privatization drove the political mobilizations of indigenous peasants even before the Revolution. Nevertheless, very few historians have actually studied the process through which indigenous lands were privatized, and their findings have been published mostly as tantalizing but sketchy articles. In this book we finally have the first intensive study of how the lands of a particular locality became private property.

En la frontera del caos

Libro En la frontera del caos

Exclusive interviews with key political figures in Mexico—former presidents Zedillo and Salinas, and guerrilla leader Marcos—are the basis of this study that untangles the complex influences that have shaped Mexico over the past 20 years. From the Zapatistas to electoral fraud, this well-researched history accounts for many parts of Mexican politics and economy that have remained obscured by official silence. Beyond recurring catastrophes, however, this journalist finds the seed of a modern democracy in Vicente Fox's presidency, one which the author analyzes in a prologue added for this...

Raza sí!, guerra no!

Libro Raza sí!, guerra no!

"A fascinating and beautifully argued interpretation of how the American war in Southeast Asia affected Chicano communities. The author provides the most complete and well-documented study to date of this important chapter in U.S. history and its impact on an ethnic group with long-standing traditions of military service, assimilation, and resistance to injustice. Oropeza's book is what students of the Chicano Movement, especially the Mexican American role in antiwar activities during the Vietnam War period, have been waiting for."—George Mariscal, author of Aztlán and Viet Nam: Chicano...
