En esta segunda edición, ampliada y revisada, de «Una espléndida sinceridad» se da información biográfica sobre Robert Louis Stevenson; se hace después un comentario de conjunto a su obra; luego, por orden cronológico, se reseñan cada uno de sus libros de ficción; y, por último, se incluyen comentarios acerca de sus obras restantes —de poesía, libros de viajes, ensayos de distinto tipo—. Junto con «La eficacia del optimismo», sobre Charles Dickens, y «Formas de la felicidad», sobre varias obras y autores decimonónicos, este libro tiene como uno de sus objetivos ampliar la información que dio el autor sobre Chesterton en «Gramática de la gratitud» y poner así más de relieve su gran categoría como crítico literario, de ahí que abunden las observaciones y críticas chestertonianas.El tono buscado, el de un lector que habla con otros lectores, hacen de «Una espléndida sinceridad» una clara y asequible introducción a la figura y las obras del escritor escocés. Además, de su lectura se desprende con claridad que no es exagerado el elogio de Borges cuando decía que Stevenson «ha dejado una obra importante que no tiene una sola página descuidada, y sí muchas espléndidas».
