Este libro es el producto de una investigación que apuesta por una nueva visión del viaje romántico. En el diálogo que el orientalismo propuesto por Edward Said establece con las manifestaciones culturales existen lugares oscuros para los que su teoría no tiene respuesta. No todo viajero justifica la ideología de dominio de occidente sobre Oriente: ¿Por qué Gérad de Nerval se identifica con los otros durante su viaje cuando relata su historia matrimonial con la hija de un cheick druso en Líbano?¿Por qué Eugène Delacroix anula su pensamiento y captura las sensaciones y sentimientos que le produce lo que ve en su camino nómada desde España y Marruecos hasta Argelia?¿Por qué Gustave Flaubert nada más regresar de sus dos años de viaje por Egipto, Turquía, Siria, Líbano, Grecia e Italia escribe su gran novela sobre la burguesía Madame Bovary?. Este tipo de preguntas encuentran una respuesta a lo largo de nuestra lectura.
