En los anos sesenta, la linguista Maria Teresa Fernandez de Miranda emprendio un estudio sobre siete variantes del zapoteco, una familia de lenguas otomangues del estado de Oaxaca, con la finalidad de reconstruir el sistema fonologico del protozapoteco. El estudio quedo suspendido por el fallecimiento prematuro de la autora en 1966. El manuscrito fue revisado por Doris A. Bartholomew en los anos subsecuentes y, aunque no fue publicado, los datos lograron circular entre algunos investigadores del zapoteco. Con unos 430 conjuntos de cognadas y poco mas de un millar de formas reconstruidas, El protozapoteco, revisado nuevamente y con notas actualizadas por Michael J. Piper, llena un vacio en los estudios comparativos de las familias linguisticas del otomangue, y sirve como punto de partida para futuros estudios comparativos.Con esta coedicion, El Colegio de Mexico y el Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia se unen para rendir homenaje a la desaparecida autora y reconocer la vigencia de la obra.
