En 1985, Sebald publica una recopilación de escritos sobre literatura austríaca con el título de 'La búsqueda de la infelicidad'. Su propuesta es que esa literatura se caracteriza por 'la infelicidad del que escribe', una infelicidad que no tiene que ver con el deseo de morir sino que es una forma de resistencia. Entre los ensayos aquí recogidos destacan los que dedica a Schnitzler y Kafka. Canetti y la paranoia del poder, Bernhard y la sátira, y Handke y la esquizofrenia literaria redondean la selección. En cuanto a los escritos recogidos en 1995 con el título de Pútrida patria, las historias alemanas del gueto y los relatos antiantisemitas de Sacher-Masoch son hoy casi desconocidos. Joseph Roth recibe un trato de excepción y Kafka aparece en un brillante estudio sobre la mesiánica figura del Agrimensor de 'El Castillo'. Todos estos ensayos giran en torno al concepto de 'patria', que es también una de las obsesiones de la literatura austríaca, especialmente la de origen judío.
